IPTV Questions The basics

What is an IPTV box, and is one necessary?

How do IPTV boxes work?

An IPTV box is a tiny computer built for video. Inside sit a processor, memory, Wi-Fi, usually an Ethernet port, and a video chip that decodes streams. It talks to the TV through HDMI and to the internet through a cable or Wi-Fi.

Once you sign in with your provider's details, the box fetches the channel list and guide, decodes each stream and hands a finished picture to the TV. The television simply works as a monitor, which is why a ten-year-old TV can show a modern IPTV service perfectly well.

What are the main types of IPTV boxes?

Common kinds of IPTV boxes and how you sign in on each

Telecom receiversBoxes rented from a TV providerLocked to that providerCannot be used with any other service

When do you actually need a box?

Only when your TV cannot run apps well. If it can install them, skip the box and save the money. Find your setup below:

Do you need a box? It depends on the screen you have
Your setupNeed a box?Why
Samsung or LG Smart TV from the last few yearsUsually noTheir app stores list several IPTV players
Android TV or Google TV set (many Sony, TCL and some Hisense models)NoPlayers install from Google Play
Roku TVOften yesRoku's store has only basic IPTV players
Older Smart TV whose apps stopped updatingYesA stick or box brings current apps
TV with no smart features but an HDMI portYesThe box supplies everything
Phone, tablet or computerNoApps run on the device itself

A box can still pay off when the TV's own apps feel sluggish, when you want an Ethernet cable behind the TV for a steadier stream, or when you want the same app and the same remote on every TV in the house.

Does a Roku count as an IPTV box?

Only loosely. Roku makes streaming players, but they run only apps from the Roku store and cannot install TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro or similar players. A handful of basic M3U players live in that store, so a Roku can play IPTV in a limited way. If IPTV is your main goal, an Android-based box or a Fire OS stick is the better match. We explain the details and workarounds in our Roku IPTV answer.

Should you buy a preloaded or 'fully loaded' box?

No. Boxes sold as "fully loaded" come with apps that have channels baked in, often advertised with no monthly fee. They tend to go wrong: apps break or disappear overnight, nobody answers when they do, and unknown software can carry malware or collect your data. Canadian courts have also issued orders against some businesses that sold preloaded boxes, a history covered in our look at IPTV and Canadian law (general information, not legal advice).

A cleaner setup has three separate parts: a plain box or stick from a known brand, a player app from a known developer, and a subscription you can test first. When one part fails, you replace only that part.

King IPTV does not sell or rent boxes. Your login works on hardware you already own: Google TV and Android TV devices, Fire OS sticks, and MAG or Formuler boxes through a portal URL and MAC address. Follow the MAG and Formuler setup steps or the steps for Android-based TVs and boxes.

Box buying questions

Which IPTV box is best in Canada?

It depends on how you watch. A box certified by Google, running Google TV or Android TV, gives the widest choice of apps. A Fire OS stick is the budget option, as long as it is not a Vega OS model. MAG and Formuler boxes suit people who only want live channels with a simple remote. Our page on choosing a device for IPTV compares them.

Does an IPTV box come with a monthly fee?

The box itself does not. You pay for it once, like any electronics purchase. The channels are a separate service, billed by the month or the year by your provider. Be wary of sellers who bundle a box with "free TV forever": that free service is usually the first thing to stop working, and there is no one to call.

Can I move my IPTV box to another TV?

Yes. Unplug it, connect it to any TV with an HDMI port, and join the Wi-Fi or plug in a cable. Your login travels with the box; on MAG boxes the portal follows the MAC address of the hardware, so nothing needs to change. Using it at a second home is fine too, within your plan's screen limit.

Try it on the box you already own

Before buying hardware, request the 24-hour trial and test your current TV, stick or box. If it works well, plans start at $18 CAD.
